Main Story Written by Sarah Stiles Bright and illustrated by Mike Deas Gloria really loved to sing Sometimes she would pretend to be an opera singer She used a pillow to give herself a big tummy Then she stood on a chair and waved her arms around as she sang at the top of her voice 3

Page 4

Page 5

But Gloria had a Big Problem and this Big Problem stopped her from doing the things she wanted to do When she wanted to try something new like ride her bike to the shop or join the football team her Big Problem would go on and on and on about all the things that might go wrong so that she would change her mind 5

Page 6

Once Alice invited her to go for a sleepover and watch a film Gloria felt very excited But her Big Problem crept up behind her and started whispering things about comets and earthquakes and blizzards So Gloria changed her mind She didn t go to Alice s house in case something AWFUL happened while she was there 6

Page 9

Each time Gloria was invited to a birthday party she wanted to sing Happy Birthday with the others But when she tried to sing her Big Problem would open its big ugly mouth and sing even louder in its big ugly voice So to avoid that Gloria sang in a soft voice that could hardly be heard 9

Page 10

One day Gloria heard that the theatre would be putting on a musical and that all the children in the town were invited to try out for a part She wanted to try out more than anything Gloria decided to practise even though her Big Problem was always around to tell her about comets and earthquakes and blizzards and that the whole town would laugh at her singing 10

Page 11

Finally it was the day for tryouts Even with her Big Problem bothering her all the time Gloria still wanted to sing When she told her parents where she was going they smiled and said Oh that s nice Then they went back to reading their newspapers When she told her brother Henry about the tryouts he burst out laughing You re doing WHAT he shouted You re going up on stage in front of all those people And you re going to sing You can t do that You have a Problem A BIG PROBLEM He laughed some more and then he laughed even harder 11

Page 12

She went to the tryout anyway Her Big Problem went along too walking right behind her as usual But nobody could see it or hear it And that made Gloria mad 12

Page 13

The entrance was full of parents and their children all waiting for their turn to sing Gloria felt nervous She could feel her worries rising in her tummy up through her chest and into her throat until her ears burned hot 13

Page 14

Suddenly she thought What if a tornado comes whirling through town while I m singing and carries me away What if a poisonous spider crawls up my leg and bites me and my leg swells up like a balloon What if a giant meteor comes crashing down to Earth and flattens me before I finish my song 14

Page 15

The list of what ifs kept getting longer and longer and Gloria s heart beat so fast that she felt like she couldn t breathe She was still cross with her brother Henry and cross with her parents who didn t take her seriously But most of all she was cross with her Big Problem that always got in her way 15

Page 16

Page 17

She was so cross that suddenly she stamped her feet turned around and looked right at her Big Problem and shouted STOP as loud as she could And to Gloria s surprise her Problem began to shrink and went to hide in the shadows at the back of the auditorium 17

Page 18

All the children and parents looked at Gloria The piano teacher stopped playing the piano Outside the cars stopped moving in the street The postman stopped delivering the mail The grocer stopped refilling the shelves The soccer players on the field stopped playing 18

Page 19

The dentist stopped cleaning teeth The vet stopped trying to bandage a kitten s leg The hairdresser stopped trying to comb a woman s messy hair The whole town stopped and listened 19

Page 20

No one had ever heard Gloria shout like that So Gloria walked briskly up onto the stage and cried BE QUIET I ve had enough of you you big ugly monster Gloria s Big Problem got smaller and smaller It hated being called a monster ENOUGH Do you hear me There are no tornadoes here or poisonous spiders I m not going to listen to you anymore Now it s time you listened to me Then Gloria began singing 20

Page 21

Page 22

Gloria was chosen for the musical A few weeks later the piano teacher the postman the hairdresser the soccer players the grocer the dentist the vet her friend Alice her parents and even her big brother Henry all come to listen to her sing Gloria played the part of a ladybird She danced around the stage and she sang beautifully THE END 22

WHY DO WE GET SCARED Fear is an emotion that we feel when there s danger around It makes our bodies react in different ways Eyes open wide Heart beating faster Shivering Sweating 1 Fear is important because it warns us that there s danger around and reminds us to be careful It prepares your body to take action whether it s facing the danger or running away 2 Mice spiders scary shadows sometimes we think there is a danger when there isn t 3 Sometimes experiences can be a bit scary like going down a tall slide or the first day at a new school 38
