I'm in kindergarten this year. Come check out my school! In the gym, we get to play with all kinds of sports equipment. The hula hoops are my favourite!I like my classroom. There is a comfy carpet to sit on and when we write or do crafts, we sit at tables and chairs that are just our size. In music class, we bang on drums and sing songs. I love singing with my friends. Written by Jeff Szpirglas and Danielle Saint-OngeIllustrated by Rob JustusCarlos stared at the grilled-cheese- and-peanut-butter sandwich on the table. He looked but did not eat it.“Carlos,” his mom said, “I made your favourite. You love peanut-butter-grilled-cheese sandwiches!”But Carlos could not eat. He was thinking too much about tomorrow. It was the first day of school. Carlos did not want to start kindergarten. He did not want to leave his mom and dad. He did not want to be apart from his pet lizard, Mr. Bobo. All he wanted to do was stay home and watch Captain Cool cartoons and build things with his blocks.24LET’SREAD

Visit owlkids.com/audio to hear this story read aloud by the author. “School is going to be amazing,” said his dad. “You will learn how to read, how to count. You will do experiments and art.”“I can do that here!” Carlos said. “With Mr. Bobo!”“Ms. Jaipoor, your new teacher, is so excited to have you in her class.”“But what about Mr. Bobo? What about Captain Cool? I watch it every morning.”“What would Captain Cool do?” said his mom. “Wouldn’t he tell you to try to be brave?”That night, Carlos did not sleep well. He kept getting up and checking on Mr. Bobo. He kept looking at the clock. He did not feel brave. When it was morning, Carlos felt icky. His mom said, “You are brave, Carlos. How can we help? Do you want a special lunch? Can I draw a special picture to bring with you?”“Can I bring Mr. Bobo in my backpack?”“No,” said his mom. “Mr. Bobo needs to stay here.”“But all I want is Mr. Bobo and my Captain Cool show and …” Then Carlos smiled. “Wait! I have an idea! Can I get the Halloween box from the basement?”“But it’s September. Halloween isn’t for two months.”“I know. Trust me, Mom!”25

Page 15

Later that morning, Carlos’s parents dropped him off at school. “Are you sure about this?” his dad said.“Oh yeah,” said Carlos. “This is going to be super cool!”Carlos was dressed in his Captain Cool costume. It was bright blue with a yellow cape. “I’ll see you after school,” he told his dad. Then he put on his backpack and marched to the kindergarten line. With his Captain Cool costume on, Carlos felt like he could take on the world! And then, he saw something surprising—a girl in line was wearing the exact same costume that he was wearing!“Do you like Captain Cool, too?” Carlos asked her.26

Page 16

“Yep!” the girl said. “I’m Julie. But you can call me Julie Cool if you want. I wonder if anyone else in our class likes Captain Cool.”Carlos was about to tell Julie all about Mr. Bobo when a loud bell rang. Carlos jumped. He was going to be brave. The school doors opened. Teachers came out. “Which one is Ms. Jaipoor?” Julie said, looking around quickly.Carlos stared at the crowd. “That must be her!” he said, pointing. The last teacher out the door was dressed in a blue suit with a yellow cape. “Hello, my super cool class!” she said. “I’m Ms. Jaipoor! I wasn’t feeling so brave this morning, so I needed some help from my favourite superhero.”Carlos and Julie looked at each other and smiled.“Kindergarten is going to be the coolest,” Carlos said. “I can’t wait to see when I can bring Mr. Bobo here …”27
