Jump Up!Sifakas (say she-FAKS) are incredible jumpers. They live in the forests of Madagascar, where trees are far apart. Sifakas can leap the length of a school bus to get from one tree to another. Leaping lemurs! Climb a tree with this cool lemur! Verreaux’s Sifaka6

TEXT: JENNA CAMPBELL ILLUSTRATIONS: BILL SUDDICK PHOTOS: GETTYISTOCK Family Sifakas are primates and are related to monkeys, apes and other lemurs. Size They weigh as much as a cat. Fave Foods They munch on plants, fruit and flowers. Super Sunbathers Sifakas start their mornings basking in the sun. They like to spread their arms wide as they catch some rays! Noisy Name Sifakas are named after the loud warning cry they make when they see a predator. She-fak! She-fak! Dancing Legs Because their feet point outwards, sifakas bound across the ground in a unique sideways hop. They have long, powerful legs and bounce like ballerinas with their backs straight and arms raised. Great Groomers Their long, thin bottom teeth are perfect for grooming! When hanging out in the trees, sifakas often lick and comb each other’s fur. Baby on Board A newborn sifaka will hang on to its mom’s belly for weeks, then hitch a ride on her back until it feels ready to tackle the treetops on its own. My brother, Felix, and I loved our visit to the ancient city of Petra. Behind us is Al-Khazneh, one of the most beautiful temples in the world. This structure was carved out of rock and is over 2,000 years old!PHOTOS: SARAH MONTREUIL ILLUSTRATIONS: CARREN KU (CAMERA, BOOKS, FLAG, BALL)TEXT: HELEN VEILLEUX ADAPTED FROM LES EXPLORATEURS Your Turn! Tell us about where you live. Is anything in Sarah’s life similar to yours? (Address page 32.) At school, we have gym class outside because it rarely rains in Jordan. I wear shorts even in November because it’s so hot. In the summer, it is 40°C (104°F) every day!Chickadee 17I rode a camel in the Wadi Rum desert. It was fun but not very comfortable. Many movies have been filmed in this desert. It is a perfect stand-in for different planets, like Mars. After three years of living here, I’ve discovered a lot of new things!
