ChapterAt witch schoolWitches and wizards have always existed. But human beings don’t know that because they live in hidden villages in the heart of a magic forest.Bertha lived in one of those villages where the shops were full of pumpkins and the fountains were overflowing with frogs. There was also a school of witchcraft in the village.ChapterChapter155P003A047_STORY update.indd 5P003A047_STORY update.indd 5 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

One day, during a lesson about spells, the teacher said to Bertha,“Try turning this teapot into a pig!”The little witch waved her magic wand gently. There were a few faint sparks. Then suddenly, there was a BANG in the classroom and the teapot reappeared covered in purple feathers!Bertha was embarrassed. She sighed,“Tricky tadpoles! Failed again…”6P003A047_STORY update.indd 6P003A047_STORY update.indd 6 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Everyone burst out laughing. Bertha’s cousin Hilda was standing next to her. She said,“I’ve got this! I’ll transform that teapot!”Hilda waved her magic wand energetically. Dazzling sparks turned the teapot into a chubby, muddy pig. Her classmates shouted “Wow!” and Hilda chuckled proudly. She loved being the centre of attention!7P003A047_STORY update.indd 7P003A047_STORY update.indd 7 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

After school, Bertha and Hilda walked home together. Hilda put her arm around her cousin’s shoulders and asked why she was sulking.Bertha replied,“I’m angry because you turned the teapot into a pig just to show off!”“Not at all,” said Hilda. “I was only trying to help you. Just as well because the teacher forgot all about the purple feathers!”“Huh!” grumbled Bertha. “What kind of help was that? Everyone laughed at me!”8P003A047_STORY update.indd 8P003A047_STORY update.indd 8 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Bertha got home and instead of doing her homework, she looked through her favourite book, The Encyclopaedia of Humans. Reading it always cheered her up when she felt sad!Bertha didn’t really understand witchcraft but she was really interested in humans. She knew all about telephones, vacuum cleaners and cars. Nobody else at school knew as much as she did about the human world. Not even Hilda!9P003A047_STORY update.indd 9P003A047_STORY update.indd 9 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Another disastrous witchcraft lesson for Bertha! To cheer herself up, the little witch reads The Encyclopaedia of Humans, her favourite book.ChapterDragon summer campThe following Saturday, Hilda and her parents came to dinner at Bertha’s house. They had roast vulture, everybody’s favourite. While the adults talked and laughed loudly, Bertha secretly read The Encyclopaedia of Humanswhich she had opened on her knees. Her cousin was sitting opposite her, gulping down her plate of roast vulture. Suddenly, Hilda called out, her mouth still full,“Hey Bertha! It’sh the holidays shoon! I can’t wait to go to shummer camp, can you?”210P003A047_STORY update.indd 10P003A047_STORY update.indd 10 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Every year, little witches and wizards went to Dragon summer camp for the holidays. They could look after gnomes there, catch fairies and make all sorts of potions. But summer camp was a nightmare for Bertha. She always ended up covered in gnome dribble, fairy scratches and burns from the potions. Everyone made fun of her. Unlike Hilda, who was good at all the activities, just like at school when she had turned the teapot into a pig!211P003A047_STORY update.indd 11P003A047_STORY update.indd 11 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Bertha made a face and replied,“I hate Dragon summer camp. I would rather go to a summer camp for humans…”“WHAT?” gasped her cousin. “You want to go to a summer camp for humans?”Hilda spoke so loudly that everyone heard her. Bertha’s parents nearly choked on their food.12P003A047_STORY update.indd 12P003A047_STORY update.indd 12 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

So Bertha plucked up courage and, with her heart beating fast, she said, “Why not? Dad, Mum, can you enrol me for a human summer camp?”Her parents gulped and said in stunned voices,“Er… We’ll see…”After dinner, Bertha spent the evening begging her parents.13P003A047_STORY update.indd 13P003A047_STORY update.indd 13 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

She went on and on about it and the next day, her mum said,“Listen, we know that you don’t like witchcraft and we don’t want to force you to go to Dragon summer camp. So you can go to a human summer camp instead.”Bertha jumped for joy. Her dad added, “Hilda’s parents want your cousin to go with you so that you can keep an eye on each other. You do realise… you can’t use magic when you are with humans! Nobody must know that witches and wizards exist.”14P003A047_STORY update.indd 14P003A047_STORY update.indd 14 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

That was a blow for Bertha. She had not expected to be going away with Hilda. It seemed that her cousin wanted to show off to humans too!But the little witch didn’t say anything in case the whole trip was cancelled.Bertha’s and Hilda’s parents did some research to find the best human summer camp for their daughters.15P003A047_STORY update.indd 15P003A047_STORY update.indd 15 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

The next day at school, Hilda was furious. She said to Bertha,“I’m going to miss Dragon summer camp because of you! You are so selfish!”1616P003A047_STORY update.indd 16P003A047_STORY update.indd 16 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

ChapterChapterBertha is very happy. She convinces her parents to register her at a summer camp for humans! But she has to go there with her cousin Hilda…Off to summer camp!It was time to go to summer camp. Bertha and her parents got up very early that morning. They put on the human costumes that they had bought at the jokes and tricks shop in the village. Bertha had chosen a party dress and some rain boots, like she had seen in The Encyclopaedia of Humans. She hoped that Hilda had a good outfit too.317P003A047_STORY update.indd 17P003A047_STORY update.indd 17 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Page 18

Just then, the doorbell rang. Bertha ran to let her cousin in. When she saw Hilda’s costume, she said,“But, er… You have just put on some sunglasses!”Hilda replied,“No, I also took off my cape and my hat. Right, shall we go?”18P003A047_STORY update.indd 18P003A047_STORY update.indd 18 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Bertha’s parents took out the family broomstick. All four of them got on, one behind the other. The broomstick flew over the magic forest. After several hours of flying, they reached a human town and they landed quietly behind the coach bus station. All the summer camp children were meeting there to get on a coach.19P003A047_STORY update.indd 19P003A047_STORY update.indd 19 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Page 20

In the parking lot, the little humans were saying goodbye to their parents. The supervisors were shouting,“Whose is this teddy? Why are those holiday workbooks on the ground? Okay everyone, time to get on the bus!”Bertha and Hilda climbed into the bus. Bertha’s parents looked a little worried… Just like all the other parents!20P003A047_STORY update.indd 20P003A047_STORY update.indd 20 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Page 21

As night fell, the bus stopped in the middle of the countryside, at a holiday camp lit up with paper lanterns. The supervisors showed the children which dormitories they were sleeping in. The dormitories were large cabins full of bunk beds. There was a lot of noise. Bertha was thrilled.“This is fantastic!”Hilda shuddered,“You mean it’s terrifying!”During the journey, Bertha smiled and waved at the other children. But nobody dared to come and say hello because she was sitting beside Hilda who had travel sickness and was vomiting into a paper bag.21P003A047_STORY update.indd 21P003A047_STORY update.indd 21 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Page 22

The next morning at breakfast, Bertha introduced herself to a boy sitting opposite her.“I’m Bertha!”The boy looked at Bertha. He had never seen a girl wearing a party dress and rain boots. But he said in a polite voice,“I’m Miles. What do you like doing best at summer camp? Cycling, archery, treasure hunts or board games?”“Tricky tadpoles! I love them all!” said Bertha.Miles smiled. He had never heard anyone say “Tricky tadpoles”! He liked this girl a lot.22P003A047_STORY update.indd 22P003A047_STORY update.indd 22 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Bertha and Hilda arrive at summer camp dressed up as humans. Hilda is terrifi ed but Bertha loves everything she sees!ChapterIt’s easy-peasy That day, the supervisors organised a bike ride. Bertha got on a mountain bike and asked Miles,“Do I put my feet on the pedals?”Miles laughed.“Are you from planet Mars or what?”The other children thought it was funny and came over to give Bertha advice. “Sit on the saddle! Don’t wiggle the handlebars! Keep them straight!”423P003A047_STORY update.indd 23P003A047_STORY update.indd 23 20/3/2024 5:23 PM20/3/2024 5:23 PM

Page 24

Bertha began to pedal faster and faster until a supervisor shouted,“Bertha, Look out!”It was too late. Bertha crashed into a tree with a big clatter. But she got up laughing and all the children laughed with her.2424P003A047_STORY update.indd 24P003A047_STORY update.indd 24 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 25

Out of the corner of her eye, Bertha saw her cousin also trying to ride a mountain bike. But Hilda just toppled over sideways straight away. She was furious. She left the bike and wandered off, muttering,“Riding bikes is rubbish!”2525P003A047_STORY update.indd 25P003A047_STORY update.indd 25 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 26

Over the next few days, Bertha noticed that Hilda was not doing so well at the activities. In the archery competition, she shot an arrow that nearly hit one of the supervisors. During the treasure hunt, all she found was an empty food tin.Bertha felt a bit sorry for her cousin… But she didn’t really have time to think about it because she was too busy having fun with Miles. And after all, Hilda had never helped her out!26P003A047_STORY update.indd 26P003A047_STORY update.indd 26 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 27

One morning, the supervisors organised a board game tournament. Miles told Bertha how the games worked and she played really well. But Hilda wasn’t listening and she did any old thing. She threw the cards instead of the dice and she played when it wasn’t her turn!In the end, the supervisors disqualified her. Hilda burst into tears and shouted,“I’ve had enough of this summer camp!”And she ran off to her dormitory.27P003A047_STORY update.indd 27P003A047_STORY update.indd 27 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 28

A few moments later, sparks came out of the cabin. Then all of a sudden, strange things began to happen. Hilda came out of the dormitory, jumped on a bike and did a spectacular sequence of figures. All the children cried out in admiration and Bertha’s eyes opened wide. Then, using a bow, Hilda shot some arrows right to the centre of the target. The whole summer camp cheered. But Bertha was in no doubt. Her cousin must have used magic to suddenly be so good at the human activities!28P003A047_STORY update.indd 28P003A047_STORY update.indd 28 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Bertha is having a lot of fun at summer camp! But Hilda is sulking and is no good at the activities. Then suddenly, she can do them really well… Strange!ChapterDisastrous spellBertha sighed,“As usual, Hilda will do anything to attract attention… I’m going to tell our parents.”But then she thought,“If I do that, they will make us go home. I prefer to stay here and have everything go back to how it was before. I’ll have to find some magic equipment to cancel Hilda’s spell!”530P003A047_STORY update.indd 30P003A047_STORY update.indd 30 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Bertha ran to Hilda’s dormitory. She found a magic wand and a spell book under a pile of clothes. A bookmark showed her which spell her cousin had used.Spell to be the best at human activities:Wave your wand and imitate a chicken, then think of something else.Bertha looked through the spell book and at the end, she discovered a chapter on cancelling spells.Find the wand that cast the spell. Wave it and blow slobbery bubbles. Then recite the spell you want to cancel.Be careful! If you are not sure you can manage it, don’t even try. The consequences could be disastrous!531P003A047_STORY update.indd 31P003A047_STORY update.indd 31 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Bertha was not great at witchcraft but she was prepared to try anything so she could stay at the summer camp for little humans. She waved the magic wand and burped saliva bubbles. Then she said,“I want to cancel the spell that made Hilda the best at human activities.”32P003A047_STORY update.indd 32P003A047_STORY update.indd 32 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

An explosion shot out of the wand and immediately Bertha heard screaming outside the cabin. She hurried over to the window shouting, “Tricky tadpoles!”33P003A047_STORY update.indd 33P003A047_STORY update.indd 33 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 34

Bikes were pedalling through the air and board games were playing themselves. The camp was in chaos. The children were terrified and the supervisors clung on to each other. Bertha was in a panic.“I’ve made a mistake again… Why do my spells always go wrong?”Suddenly she spotted her cousin. Hilda was being chased by some water pistols and yelling,“Help!”34P003A047_STORY update.indd 34P003A047_STORY update.indd 34 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Bertha’s heart skipped a beat. She put the magic wand in her pocket and rushed outside.“Hang on, Hilda!” she said as she jumped on a flying bike. She pedalled over to her cousin and helped her up onto the back of the saddlebag rack. The wind was blowing so hard that the bike flew high up into the air…35P003A047_STORY update.indd 35P003A047_STORY update.indd 35 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Disaster! Bertha tries to cancel the spell that makes Hilda the best at all the activities but she turns the summer camp upside down…Chapter6Team cousins! After a dangerous landing on the roof of the cabin, the cousins stared at the disaster below. Bertha explained,“I wanted to cast a cancellation spell but I messed it up.”“A cancellation spell?” said Hilda in surprise. “But why?”“To cancel your spell!” said Bertha in a cross voice. “You just couldn’t resist showing off again, could you? And this time, you can’t say that you wanted to help me like with the teapot and the purple feathers!”36P003A047_STORY update.indd 36P003A047_STORY update.indd 36 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

6Hilda looked down, feeling ashamed. Bertha said to her,“You’d better clear up the camp! I didn’t manage it as usual.”“This time, I’ll help you,” said Hilda. “I’ll show you how to do it and you’ll be fine!”Bertha looked worried. Hilda explained,“It’s not enough to just follow the instructions in the spell book. You have to concentrate on the magic inside the wand.”37P003A047_STORY update.indd 37P003A047_STORY update.indd 37 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 38

Bertha’s hand shook as she gripped the wand. She could feel it vibrating slightly…“I think it’s purring!” she said in amazement.“Perfect,” said Hilda. “Now let the magic from the wand pass into your body. And when you feel ready, cast the spell.”Bertha closed her eyes so she could concentrate. The vibration in the wand became mixed up with her heartbeat. She waved the wand around like she was the conductor of an orchestra and burped out some saliva bubbles. Then she said in a firm voice,“I want to cancel the spell that makes Hilda the best at the human activities!”38P003A047_STORY update.indd 38P003A047_STORY update.indd 38 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 39

The wand sparkled and lightning lit up the sky: CRACK!The bikes landed back down on the ground, the board games returned to their boxes and soon the whole camp was tidy again. The children and the supervisors were stunned but the cancellation spell had worked so well that, fortunately, they didn’t remember anything!39P003A047_STORY update.indd 39P003A047_STORY update.indd 39 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Hilda congratulated her cousin.“You did it!”“Only because you helped me!” said Bertha. “Now it’s my turn to teach you the human activities.”The next day, Bertha showed Hilda how to ride a bike. She also tried to explain the rules of Cluedo to her but Hilda preferred the answers to be whispered in her ear…40P003A047_STORY update.indd 40P003A047_STORY update.indd 40 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

With Hilda’s help, Bertha casts the cancellation spell that puts the camp back in order. The two cousins make up.ChapterA new friendFor the second last night at summer camp, the supervisors suggested a fancy dress evening. The children searched in chests full of costumes. Surrounded by masks and frills, Hilda said to Bertha,“The human world is not so bad after all. But I still prefer witchcraft. And I’ve got an idea for a dressing up costume…”741P003A047_STORY update.indd 41P003A047_STORY update.indd 41 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

She quietly waved her magic wand and the cousins were suddenly dressed as witches. They were delighted and they burst out laughing. But just then, someone shouted behind them,“AAAAH!”It was Miles, who had come to show them his magician’s costume. He had seen everything! He was horrified and ran away as fast as his legs would carry him.42P003A047_STORY update.indd 42P003A047_STORY update.indd 42 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Bertha caught up with him in the moonlight. She was out of breath. She admitted,“We are witches but we are not dangerous. So don’t be scared!”She explained everything to him, from the teapot to cancelling the spell. Miles was gobsmacked. Then, in a shy voice, he said to Bertha,“I knew there was something special about you!”4343P003A047_STORY update.indd 43P003A047_STORY update.indd 43 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

Page 44

The next day, Miles asked the cousins loads of questions about witchcraft. Just for him, Bertha transformed a teapot into a pig. The pig had purple feathers but Miles was impressed all the same. Then Bertha asked his advice about behaving like a little human. Miles replied,“Humans don’t usually say ‘Tricky tadpoles’. Instead you can say, ‘Uh oh’ ”.“Ok, tricky tadpoles uh oh,” said Bertha.Miles burst out laughing.44P003A047_STORY update.indd 44P003A047_STORY update.indd 44 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM

It was time to leave summer camp. The two cousins sat next to each other on the bus. Miles sat in the seat in front of them and turned round to ask them,“Shall we call each other or write after summer camp?”Bertha mumbled sadly,“Sorry, we can’t. There are no post deliveries, no telephones and no internet where we live…”Miles’ eyes were brimming with tears and Bertha felt like her heart was breaking.45P003A047_STORY update.indd 45P003A047_STORY update.indd 45 20/3/2024 5:24 PM20/3/2024 5:24 PM
